The Unearthly Series by Laura Thalassa

The first time I was declared dead, I lost my past. The second time, I lost my humanity. Now I’m being hunted, and if I die again, my soul is up for forfeit.

After enrolling in Peel Academy, an elite supernatural boarding school on the British Isles, the last of the sirens, Gabrielle Fiori, only wants to fit in. Instead, the elixir meant to awaken her supernatural abilities kills her.

When Gabrielle wakes up in the morgue twelve hours later, something wicked is awakened in her, something even the supernatural community has never seen before. Now the only person who can help her is Andre de Leon, the community’s infamous bad boy and the king of vampires.

Yet even his help can’t prevent the repeated attempts on Gabrielle’s life. Someone is after her, and they will stop at nothing to end her short existence. Only Gabrielle cannot let that happen now that her soul hangs in the balance, because she may have met the devil. And he wants her. Bad.

I have a lot of thoughts coming up for air at the end of this series. Rather than do an individual post for each, I’m just going to do one for the whole series. First off, I got the first book because I saw that some of it took place at Peel Academy, the school mentioned in the Bargainer series by Laura that I really really loved. This series takes place in the same world, but I have no idea the time frame. I’m going to guess that this series comes before the other.

Okay, jumping right in. This series is wonderful and everyone needs to read it. Laura is an urban fantasy master. She writes characters you will cry over. She is not kind to her characters. When I say they struggle, I mean, man do they struggle. Of course, it all works out in the end, and everyone comes out happier and stronger.

My favorite part about Laura’s writing though is her side characters. The token best friends are the best part. Hands down. In every book of hers I’ve read. The banter is witty and hilarious, the comments snarky. I love everything about the besties. (they also tend to cuss a lot, which endears them to me even more.)

Okay, I lied. My favorites are tied. I also love the villains. Here’s why. Laura understands that no one is the villain of their own story, and she gives us enough insight into the villain’s backstory/psyche to know why they aren’t a villain in their own eyes. Next thing I know, I’m crying over the literal devil. Everyone knows a really excellent bad guy can completely make a story. Add a really excellent bad guy to an already amazing story, and be still my heart!

This series will set any urban fantasy lover up for a while.
