Do you guys remember that commercial with the camel yelling, “Hump Day!!!”? I think about that every week. Anyway, it’s time for Top 5 Wednesday again! This week’s topic is series that got better with each book. People always like to talk about series that went downhill, but sometimes it’s nice to talk about series that are worth suffering through the first book (or books) to get to the good stuff. I’ve got a few worthy ones to talk about, so let’s get on with it!
The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo- The first time I read Shadow & Bone, I was dragging myself through it. Alina was so hung up on Mal and wasn’t trying very hard to become the Grisha she was purported to be. Plus, there was a lot of unnecessary cattiness. It wasn’t until the last third or so when Alina started really developing her powers that it got good. And, luckily, it stayed good. Except for that ending. What the fuck.
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead- Truthfully, I liked the first couple books. They just weren’t as good as the rest of the series and focused a little too much on high school drama. Once the real story really starts kicking in, it’s so good. While I do prefer Bloodlines, this series is still one of the mid-2000s greats.
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas- Not going to lie, the first book of this series was boring. Only the last fourth is any good. The series really picks up with book two (which has much better characters, by the way). And, while I freely admit that the final book is not as good as the second, it is still better than the first. I’m no Maas apologist, but I’m still a sucker for this series.
Addicted/Calloway Sisters series by Krista & Becca Ritchie- Quite frankly, Addicted to You was rough. The writing was not very good and nothing about the characters grabbed me. But that ending! Holy shit! That was the moment it got good. Throughout the entire rest of the series, the sisters’ writing improved dramatically and I fell in love with these characters. This is one sisterly relationship I’ll never forget.
Embrace series/The Violet Eden Chapters by Jessica Shirvington- The first couple books are pretty standard mid-2000s YA, but by book three things really get good. The fourth book broke my heart and the final book went places no other YA book really goes. If you’re interested in Clare-esque worlds, definitely check this one out.
