Viki’ review: Slouch witch by Helen Harper

Let’s get one thing straight – Ivy Wilde is not a heroine. In fact, she’s probably the last witch in the world who you’d call if you needed a magical helping hand, regardless of her actual abilities. If it were down to Ivy, she’d spend all day every day on her sofa where she could watch TV, munch junk food and talk to her feline familiar to her heart’s content.

However, when a bureaucratic disaster ends up with Ivy as the victim of a case of mistaken identity, she’s yanked very unwillingly into Arcane Branch, the investigative department of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Her problems are quadrupled when a valuable object is stolen right from under the Order’s noses. It doesn’t exactly help that she’s been magically bound to Adeptus Exemptus Raphael Winter. He might have piercing sapphire eyes and a body which a cover model would be proud of but, as far as Ivy’s concerned, he’s a walking advertisement for the joyless perils of too much witch-work.

And if he makes her go to the gym again, she’s definitely going to turn him into a frog.

Title: Slouch witch (The lazy girl’s guide to magic #1)

Genres: Paranormal romance

I really loved everything from the author so far but somehow the title of this book just didn’t project any kind of positive thing for me. I mean it’s not really an inspiring title but then I decided to try it anyway because I love the author style.

  • The beginning of the story unfortunately doesn’t start with a band, unlike the author other books. It was kind of slow and not something that would necessarily pull me in when it comes to reading. As things progressed they also got a bit more dynamic and interesting but I wonder it was too little too late.
  • Ivy the main character has some of the same characteristics that are specific for all of the author’ main girls. Sarcastic, crafty and sassy, these are always there but with a different spin and light. It wouldn’t bother me because I love my protagonists just like that. Unfortunately Ivy also was a slob and lazy as heck. She is not an inspiring or appealing character and it pissed me of a bit how she operated. Her only motivation getting back on her couch when it’s clear that she is smart and talented, I mean look at what she accomplished with little to no effort, imagine what she could have been with a bit more of it. Yeah, so her personality was a big downer for me.
  • I loved Brutus, the cat. He is the best part of the book and his final sentence about killed me. Go him!
  • I found the plot a bit directionless, somewhat boring and dull. I think the whole investigation part the main characters did was a shot in the dark and they only succeeded thanks to some luck on their side. I just couldn’t get into it.
  • I think that the romance part of this story came out of nowhere. I mean I expected the main characters to get together they usually do but I just couldn’t feel the chemistry between them.
  • It has a lot of funny bits and an enjoyable read but for me it wasn’t top notch. I don’t even know if I’m going to read the next book. Maybe for some more Brutus moments.
