review 1: Hélène's friends have turned on her for some reason, writing cruel things on bathroom walls at school, snickering behind her back, making fun of her in front of her school mates. She beings to believe the lies, imagines herself as a sausage and other too-fat-for-words shapes. She loathes herself and her treks to school. Her only consolation is Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, a book she buries herself in to avoid the smirks and cruel comments. When she and her classmates are sent away to sleep-away camp for 4 days, she endures the laughter and pain until a new girl shows her that things can be different and you don't have to allow others make you feel small. The soft illustrations are brought to life with pops of color that increase as Hélène's mood and self-image changes... more. A good story about bullying, endurance, and the joy that both reading and good friends can bring to life.
review 2: Incredible teen graphica. I've started my own collection of graphic novels, and must buy this book to add in. The illustrations are amazing, the prose: witty, curious, gripping...and starkly relatable. The story centres around Helene, a young Montreal girl who is bullied and made an outcast in what seems like the course of one night. Her story becomes our window to her clearly hormonal-imbalanced school mates and their verbal cruelty towards her. In the interim of school, Helene finds solace in reading Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. These moments bring "Jane, the Fox and Me" to life through beautiful watercolour illustrations that capture Helene's escape and euphoria in her imagination. The watercolours juxtapose the raw black and white sketches of Helene's reality. This book is truly a work of art, complimented by a quick but captivating story. less
