review 1: Tim is a pretty happy-go-lucky kind of guy. He's a surfer boy at heart, so when his ex-girlfriend finds a place for him to live that's close to his favorite surf spots and the restaurant where he works, it's a big win as far as Tim is concerned. He may find his landlady Anna to be a bit odd, but he also thinks she's kind and harmless.Anna certainly is a little strange, but she's struggling mightily with some weighty issues. She has, amongst other things, agoraphobia. As the reasons for this are slowly revealed, you will come to care about Anna as much as Tim does.Their relationship progresses slowly and with an intimacy anchored in emotion, not sexual need. They like each other, and they enjoy each other's company. Anna confides in Tim, and he finds himself telling her som... moree of his challenges. Within the forbidding mansion where the two live, they form a sort of oasis in which they are protected from the outside.Unfortunately, those external forces find their way in. Anna may have tried to shove unwanted objects into a junk room, but she can't stop junk from coming into her home. First there are her friends, a rather odd and creepy brother and sister duo, and then there is Tim's ex-girlfriend. No one seems to come to Anna's home without an ulterior motive, and those motives are deadly. At the same time, strange things are happening in the house - things that freak out both Tim and Anna. There are mysteries afoot here. A couple are fairly easily solved by careful readers, but that isn't to say that Rebecca James is obvious in her storytelling. She may not want to trick you or lead you astray, but she doesn't obviously telegraph her plot twists, either. They make sense in a way that isn't intended to shock so much as to underscore the fragility of life, love, trust, and fidelity. Anything can tear you apart if you let it, James seems to say. The best way to fortify yourself against the pain is to surround yourself with love, and that's a lesson that Anna and Tim have to learn. This is a creepy book in the best possible way. It's also one that will capture your attention and keep you turning the pages.Published on VoxLibris.net@VoxLibris
review 2: Rebecca James’ “Sweet Damage” drew me in after just a fraction of the 304 pages. I couldn’t stop reading. I felt passionately about the characters. I wanted to understand them better and I wanted to see them get what they deserve in life, good or bad.James sets the perfect scene. I felt like I was in Sydney and I’ve never been to Australia. I felt like I knew Anna’s house intimately and it was something created with words on a page. Anna, Tim, and Lilla have such strong personalities that there’s no danger of them being too much alike or too cookie cutter, for lack of a better phrase.Their stories are strong and they have qualities that make them jump off the page. That makes for an excellent story. As I read, I went back and forth behind the meaning of the story. I thought I understood the plot and the purpose but I was pleasantly surprised, startled even, when things turned out very much different than I expected. I like books that keep me on edge, making me turn the page just when I think I’ve got it all figured out.“Sweet Damage” is available for purchase now.(I received a copy of “Sweet Damage” through NetGalley in exchange for an honest and original review. The review will be post on NetGalley, Goodreads, and my blog.) less
