review 1: This book is a great example of a memoir that lets itself loose a bit (or a good deal). It is supposedly about Solnit's dealing the decline of her mother, whom she did not get along with well for most of her life. However, she explores a variety of ideas throughout the book, all of which relate back at least tangentially. Overall, though, Solnit is interested in stories, how we shape them and how they shape us. The opening and closing chapters, in fact, have some of the best quotes about story that I've read in a long time. Those two chapters alone would make the book worth reading.
review 2: I had never heard of Rebecca Solnit before until I read the articles she wrote for TomDispatch & decided I would like to read more of her work. I did not know what t
... moreo expect when I read "The Faraway Nearby". It is autobiographical but she, also, writes about other topics - like little essays - & weaves them into her own story. And it works! I enjoyed her book. It was entertaining, interesting & she left me with ideas to ponder. I certainly plan on reading more of her books! less

read 1/2. Mythic quality and allusions but still slow and boring although the prose is lovely
