review 1: It was a pretty quick read. There are good messages within especially about not taking our freedoms and love for granted.The two issues I had with this book was that it felt rushed, too short and the ending left me confused. Why didn't Farida go back to Ade? She was his wife. At first I thought maybe she died but I reread the following.."Two decades later, I have forgiven myself for leaving, for trying, for dreaming, for all of it."So I am left with the questions, what happened to them? Did they keep in touch by the postcards?I hope that when Madonna creates the film adaptation that she can fill in these blanks with help from Rebecca Walker.
review 2: Ms. Walker refuses to take the predictable plot route in telling this story, her first work of published fictio... moren. As the story opens, abruptly some may conclude, the reader doesn't know the protagonist or her location. Walker slowly piece-meals the information to the reader as she intricately unveils the characters—"Farida", her love, Ade, and the characters who make up Ade’s world. What gives this story its backbone is Walker's incredible use of imagery. The reader practically smells the ocean, sits with “Farida” and Ade as their love grows, and feels “Farida’s” anxiety as she grapples with African socio-political conflict unbeknownst to a privileged American. The con in Ms. Walker’s tale is the lack of any real resolution. What happens to “Farida” and Ade’s love? Otherwise, Ms. Walker does a fine job of displaying the affection of two kids, and what the clash looks like when different cultures (each with its own perspectives, traditions, and opinions) intertwine. less
