review 1: I seriously don't understand the bad reviews for this book. I agree that the second half was better than the first half, but that doesn't mean the first half was bad. The author did a superb job of entwining a work of fiction with history. She makes note of several 'changes' she made to accommodate her novel, so I did not expect it to be 'factual'. Not one to give spoilers, I won't say much about the plot or story, but it was well written. I enjoyed the authors voice and style. It was descriptive without being heavily descriptive. The only aspect of the book that didn't appeal to me was the fact that I didn't find the main character likeable. At all. The saving grace was that I enjoyed many of the secondary characters enough to balance it out. Definitely worth the read, yo... moreu won't be disappointed.
review 2: Excellent. This book truly hooked me in from the beginning. Vera, to me, was a character I think any woman can relate to. She was vivid and unsure of herself at first, and, caught between two worlds and two men, somehow found who she was (even if she didn't always like herself). I admit that at first the prospect of a love story didn't thrill me, but the mention of Al Capone hooked me.This book mixed fiction with factual events and 'real-life' figures, without taking too many liberties- just enough to give you a sense of time and history. There was action, suspense, and it did not end the way I had expected it to. I was hooked after the first chapter. In fact, I read it in a couple of hours when I should have been sleeping. less
