review 1: Coco Chanel transformed the way women dressed. Her influence remains so pervasive that we can see her afterimage a dozen times while walking down a street: in the little black dresses, flat shoes, costume jewelry, cardigan sweaters, and tortoiseshell eyeglasses on women of every age and background. A bottle of Chanel No. 5 perfume is sold every three seconds. Arguably, no individual has had a deeper impact on the visual aesthetic of the world. But how did a poor orphan become a global icon of both luxury and everyday style? How did she develop such vast, undying influence? And what does our ongoing love of all things Chanel tell us about ourselves? These questions are answered in this book as well as Chanel's reported confidences with the Nazi's during WWII. A good novel t... morehat opens your eyes to how she influenced the world.
review 2: A fascinating biography of Coco Chanel that looks at her place in "the pulse of history." Chanel was an abandoned child who was determined to rise to the top of society, using any means necessary. Her fashion sense was singular and self referential, but women of all ranks became willing Chanel clones. The book follows her rise to fame, follows her many romantic alliances, her affiliation to a Nazi SS officer during the occupation of France, and her resurgence post war. I enjoyed every page! less
