Favourite Series I Started This Year

We are fast approaching the end of the year, and so it seems like the perfect time to discuss some of the amazing books I read this year.  I have already talked about some of my favourite books that I read in 2017 in a recent Top Ten Tuesday post, so today I wanted to talk about some of my favourite series that I started this year.

For me, 2017 was definitely the year of the series.  Nearly half of all the books I read this year were part of a series, with alot of those also being first books in series.  I’ve never been a huge reader of series in the past, most likely because the majority of the books I read were contemporaries, which just happen to commonly be standalones.  However, this year I have started a fair few series, and so I wanted to share some of my favourites.

So here are six of my favourite first books in series that I read this year!

Out of all the books on here, this is definitely the one that I expected the least from going in, and also the one that exceed my expectations the most, as this became one of my favourite books of the entire year.   I loved everything about this book, from the addictive plot to the characters who I just never wanted to stop reading about, including an amazing cast of side characters.  I just fell straight into this world and this gorgeous writing style that hooked me from the offset.  I also love the fact that this is series is only going to be a duology, and so can’t wait to pick up the second, and final book when it comes out next year.

Ever since I finished The Mortal instruments series at the very start of the year, I have been constantly telling myself that I needed to start this series.  Not only did I really want to continue exploring the Shadowhunter world and read more of Cassandra Clare’s books, but I also had heard such amazing things about this trilogy, so I really wanted to give it a go for myself, and I’m really glad I finally did.  I really loved returning to the Shadowhunter world in this book, especially as we got to explore it in a completely different time period and place than we did in The Mortal Instruments.  As always, this book was addictive and fast paced, and I can not wait to see where both the story, and the characters go in the next book.

This was one of my first reads of the year, as I read it all the way back in January, and yet I still remember how much I enjoyed this fantastic book.  I first picked this up because I saw it described as an alternate history book that follows our main character Yael as she has to compete to win a motorcycle race in order to assassinate Hitler, something that just drew me in straight away, and which is exactly what I got when I read it.  This is such a unique novel that I loved not only because of the amazing historical aspects within in, but also because of the characters, in particular Yael and Luka, who I just found to be such interesting and complex characters.  The ending of this one also left me instantly wanting to pick up the sequel, Blood for Blood, something which I am definitely hoping to get round to doing very soon!

Not only was 2017 a great year for series, but it was also the year that I finally read a V. E. Schwab book, and I’m so glad I finally did.  I was really intrigued by the main concept of this book even before picking it up, so I really enjoyed reading about it and watching this idea develop more as the book went on.  I adored diving it this world and really liked the plot of this one, but out of everything it was definitely the characters that left the biggest impact on me.  I really loved reading about August and Katherine, and thought they were such amazing characters that I can’t wait to follow once again in Our Dark Duet.

The Lunar Chronicles is another series that I have been meaning to pick up ever since I first heard about these books, and thankfully I finally did so back in the summer.  I actually read this first book in just two days because of how invested I was in this story from the offset, as I just constantly wanted to know what was going to happen next.  This book included everything that I wanted it to, from amazing characters to plot twists I never saw coming, and a world I thoroughly enjoyed exploring.  I’ve actually also already continued on with this series, as I read Scarlet a couple of weeks ago now, and so far am really enjoying where this series is going, and again just can’t wait to see where it goes next!

Finally, here is another new favourite of mine that I can’t believe I didn’t read earlier.  Given all of the amazing reviews this one has, I definitely went into it with pretty high expectations, and yet still this book managed to exceed all of these.  I love so many different aspects of this book, from the epic heist plot to the world that I really enjoyed exploring more.  But by far my favourite part of this entire book was the extraordinary characters that we got to meet and follow along, all of whom I would happily read so many more books about, so its safe to say that I can’t wait to continue on with them in Crooked Kingdom!

What are some of your favourite series that you started this year?  Have you read any of these – what did you think?
