review 1: A wonderful memoir by the Cuban-American poet chosen to read his works at the second Obama inauguration. Beautifully written, it tells of Blanco's struggles to come to terms with his heritage as well as his sexuality. If you've ever been curious about Miami's tight-knit Cuban community, this offers colorful and tender insights into the residents' immigrant difficulties and the ambivalence experienced by the American born sons and daughters.
review 2: I had the pleasure of seeing Richard Blanco at an author event at our wonderful local independent bookstore, Book Passage in Corte Madera, CA. In addition to being so warm and personable, Blanco is a wonderful reader. Not so surprising as Blanco is a poet and understand that literary work can also be music as we... morell as great theatre. He also brought slides to accompany the excerpts he read from this rich and detailed memoir of his childhood in Miami amongst a tight knit community of Cuban exiles. Really enjoyable book and it gave me a great opportunity to practice my Spanish! less
