review 1: Walking away from this book I'm surprised that I liked Madison. After reading biographies on Washington and Adams I was no longer a Jefferson fan. Jefferson and Madison were close. While this book is only this book is only 250 pages it is not a quick read. Well written, interesting, and a dry sense of humor - I found myself chuckling quite a bit. I would say this is balanced - I have a good idea of who Madison was. There are things I like and respect about him, but there are also things I'm disappointed in - which is fair he was human.
review 2: Very readable. Partly it's a biography but mainly a political analysis. Brookhiser likes President Madison, which doesn't stop him from weighing his views and positions with an objective and knowledgeable eye. I had... moren't given any thought to Madison's career after he retired, but he continued to be influential among his network of contacts. We're lucky that in those days much of political contact was by letter. We have a window on Madison's involvement with the South Carolina secession crisis during Jackson's presidency. less
