review 1: I really enjoy Richard Engel's writing and reporting. to be honest I think this one could have used a little editing, as he does seem to repeat himself a bit, but it's a compelling read. I don't consider this one journalism as much as a journal (like it says it is) and the analysis is more personal than political, but that okay too. It's a personal look at a world so distant form my own that I couldn't help but be fascinated.
review 2: Normally I wouldn't hav picked this book up. I am a member of an embassy book club and this was the pick for the month. I was surprised how much I actually enjoyed this book. I liked Engel's style of writing. I found the factual aspects not overwhelming. Sometimes in non-fiction the authors can get all hung up on historical infor
... moremation, dates, people, etc. But Engel's information wasn't overloaded. Each piece of information was well placed and not too much, but enough to paint a picture of the region. less
