‘The Day She Died’ by Catriona McPherson

Rating: 5/5 stars

“That was the day I met Gus, the day I grew a family as if from magic beans, the day she died. That’s the point, see? It was the very same day…

Jessie Constable has learned the hard way to always keep herself safe. But meeting Gus King changes everything. Before she knows it, Jessie is sleeping at Gus’s house, babysitting his kids, becoming a part of his family. And yet, she can’t ignore the unsettling questions. Who does she keep seeing from the corner of her eye? Why are strange men threatening her? Most importantly, what really happened to Gus’s wife?

Creating a brilliant, foreboding mystery where nothing is as it seems, master storyteller Catriona McPherson weaves an ominous tale that will keep you guessing until the very end.

And indeed this book kept me guessing right up to the end. It had me thinking, frowning, but wide-eyed trying to figure it out. Catriona McPherson tells a mysterious tale using well-crafted characters with each their own quite complex personalities. You’ll find yourself trying to figure out why s/he’s behaving this or that way, and more often than I’m proud of I caught myself thinking “How did I not see this??”. Thanks to Fictionophile for her Throwback Thursday recommendation (I trust her recommended reads because I find my tastes align with hers), I bought this title on Kobo. Quite new to Kobo and thought I’d just give it a shot because I had a $10 gift card, and of course, I had to painstakingly CHOOSE from my TBR
