review 1: Medical romance is the bomb. I keep hoping for the Radclyffe heir-apparent. The one that writes with equal expertise, but goes deeper to reach a full, fleshed out story (beyond the formulaic 250 pages). The developing romance between Dr. Jess McKenna, L.A. Metro’s Chief of the ER, and Dr. Kimberly Donovan, the new psychiatrist was believable, but the depth of this story just barely scratched my itch. Hovering superficially above where it needed to immerse the reader into this world and exit changed by the experience. The medical details were scarce. The negative vibe describing the other medical personnel didn't add to the feel of the story aside from being a bit of a downer. Why Jess was so hard to reach was finally revealed, but very predictable long before. I really ... morewanted to enjoy this book because I thought it had a great pairing (troubled, intense ER physician + gentle, kind psychiatrist) and a lot of opportunity for creative plot twists. But it just didn’t live up to any of my expectations. Unless you’re a big fan of Ms. Nolan already, I wouldn’t recommend it.
review 2: I started with The Wish by R.J. Nolan and ever since reading that short story had been dying to get into LA Metro. I wasn't disappointed! LA Metro is medical romance that has just the right amount of medical and the right amount of romance. The two characters of Kimberly Donovan and Jess McKenna each show their flaws loud and clear as the story unfolds, but it is the willingness to reach out to friendship that makes LA Metro a sweet romance. The two characters acknowledge their physical attraction but it isn't the focus of the story rather their shared time together working through various cases in the hospital, their hesitancy in offering a platonic relationship outside of work, and finally those moments when all they can do is think about the other, builds a romance with the happy ever after. I enjoyed both of R.J. Nolan's work so far and am looking forward to enjoying more in the future. less
