review 1: My 6 1/2 year old loves this so much that he asks guests to read it to him. It will appeal to a wide age range (one adult friend sat down to look at it and was not available for conversation until she was quite far into the book). The illustrations are funny and rich -- the posture and expressions of Rayburn, our melancholy hero, draw empathy and laughter. Truly, I laugh out loud in several places, and that's after reading it multiple times. We will be sad the day we have to return this to the library, and may need to get our own copy.
review 2: I loved every page of this book! The premise was typical: a trio of unlikely heroes has to save the day. But it had a very creative background story: each town in 1860s England has its own terrifying "Monster on the
... more Hill" who terrorizes the town but also keeps the town safe from the incomparable "Murk". Except Stoker-on-Avon, whose monster is all emo and refuses to terrorize. Our unlikely heroes comprise this emo monster, a disgraced town inventor/scientist, and a street urchin/town crier. The banter between the three was laugh-out-loud funny at times, and I loved them! It was all just so fun and hilarious. less

The idea was clever, but some of characters fell a bit flat for me.
