review 1: There are plenty of things going for this book in my mind. It's by a rock writer who writes like a rock writer. It's by an author with a couple of books that are in turns touching and thought-provoking. And, again, he's talking about the era of music I like. But this music is being performed in karaoke bars across the world. The book is really a number of essays. Probably a third of these are about the author singing karaoke. Another third are about some of the songs or bands that happen to be in the karaoke music books. And the last third is really about the author's courting of his girlfriend, an astronomer and dj and karaoke fan. Sheffield writes about his love life in a romantic way for a rock writer. I actually liked this part best and could have gone without the kara... moreoke theme pulling these essays together. I absolutely laughed out loud while reading this. I have a "Rush friend" from high school who is now a Rush denier - now I understand what happened. The book started strong and was weak in the middle, but concluded well with the happy ending of his courtship (and the discussion of Geddycorns).
review 2: I was thrilled out of my mind when I saw this title on the library shelf. Then I realized that it was about karaoke. How could this possibly be interesting or good? But as I read, I realized that this was only a framework to hang the story on, and I was relieved. I want to talk to Rob Sheffield about music. I would be far too intimidated to discuss music with any other rock critic, but I think he would never make fun of my tastes. He's got some pretty wacky favorites as well. I have lots of crushes in life-The Musician Crush, The Athlete Crush, The News Reporter Crush, etc. I guess Rob Sheffield is my Journalist Crush. He writes about music and ties it so neatly to human emotion. His books are so heartfelt and funny. I'm happy he found love again. less

I pretty much underlined every line in this book. All karaoke aficionados need to read this.

One of the most boring and pointless books I've ever read. Big yawn.
