The Years of Lyndon Johnson
review 1: This very long book could have been written and understood in about half the time. The author's intent is to cover the period 1958-1963 and it did. It also gave background on Johnson's upbringing, which contributed to the book. Crystal clear, the conflict between the Kennedys and Johnson. It's also apparent that Johnson's political acumen was critical to the transition after JFK's assassination to both continuity and making the presidency his own. Also notable, his successful passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 after a history of reelection from a segregated South. Finally, he was a ruthless politician. I've had enough LBJ, don't intend to read the other three books on his life and political career.
review 2: My interest was sparked after seeing "all the
... moreWay" on Broadway and Richard Caro's tome came highly recommended. He truly does set a new standard for historical biography. 605 pages of living history that not only recorded the familiar, but with much additional insight and information. Lyndon B. Johnson did not have it easy, yet when in the post assassination period, he had to negotiate with both sides, he was nothing short of a master. Caro examines a man who lived with persistent feelings of inferiority and yet he was driven and hard working so much so that he was probably the most effective president in history in terms of policy. Unfortunately, the Vietnam legacy is what most people remember but there is so much more. less

4.5 really. A little repetitive in places, but a model of organized research.
