Nero Wolfe Novels by Robert Goldsborough
review 1: Honestly more of a three and a half. It was good, but I've just been reading Stout's originals, and Goldsborough's not quite as good to me. (But then, who is?) With Stout, I always felt I was playing catch up, while with this, I had it figured out about halfway through. The writing doesn't quite feel as sharp to me either. It's still enjoyable, but there's a reason that Stout's Nero Wolfe is such a classic. Still, not bad if you're in for a snappy 1950s mystery.
review 2: After all of Goldsborough's other Wolfe pastiches being set in the present day, I admit I was disappointed that this latest one was set in the past, because I was enjoying his depictions of Wolfe & Archie adapting to the Internet age. Also, this novel had a really prolonged introduction which
... moreseemed to have no other purpose than proving that the author had researched all the main characters. You shouldn't need to spend more than one chapter introducing the characters. That is why I have only given this 3 stars. Once the story FINALLY got rolling it was OK. There were a few off character incidents, such as Saul Panzer saving Archie's bacon when Archie can generally take care of himself, but not enough to really spoil my enjoyment of the novel. I hope Mr Goldsborough continues to write Nero Wolfe tales. less
