review 1: At some point in a man's life, one begins to have more past than future. I'm not quite there yet, but my appreciation of the past and how it has shaped the present is appreciating. In short, my appreciation is appreciating. This whirlwind tour manages the difficult task of condensing with as little myopia as possible. An obvious companion book is Peoples' History of the United States. Perhaps some of my favorite parts of this book occurred during the Jacksonian Era; I had no idea Jackson and his cohorts brought about a conscious drop from the usual regal style of their predecessors. Today I feel more connected to my land.
review 2: This was exactly the book I had been looking for. IT was just brief run though of the US history from the time of its discove... morery and founding through Clinton and the 2000 election. Its less than 300 pages so you can imagine it doesn’t spend a lot of time on any one subject and a few Presidents were covered with no more than a single line if at all. But it gave a great overview and put a number of things in perspective. less
