review 1: Set in Northern Mexico, this novel has similarities to 2666, but doesn't focus on the Juarez murders. It's about an itinerant exiled professor who is booted out of his Spanish job when he begins a gay affair with a well-drawn character who is an artist, and one of his students. I appreciate Bolano's comfort with homosexuality in a way rarely seen among American straight authors of his generation. If you do nothing else, find this book and read pgs 20-24, which, in a single sentence is the most beautifully poignant description of South American intellectual's life in the second half of the 20th century that you're likely to read anywhere. If you love Bolano, you'll love this book...it has all his signature poetry, humor and wisdom...he falls into an affair with a forger of ... moreLarry Rivers paintings once he's in Mexico :) I've read a great deal of Bolano now...By Night in Chile, Distant Star, The Insufferable Gaucho, Savage Detectives, Last Evenings on Earth, the Skating Rink, Monsieur Pain and by far, my favorite, Amulet..and would say this is a good solid Bolano novel with everything you come to expect from his work...which, in a sense, is everything. Bolano is great because he's a big inclusive thinker, limitless in his intellect and curiosity and big-hearted. I can't recommend him enough, but also encourage starting with the short stories or shorter novels as his books are challenging and a lot to bite into.
review 2: bolano had more talent and verve in his control than most any writer one could name. this "novel", written of moer than two decades, was unfinished upon author;s death, and like greg says, probably never would have been published if roberto had anything to say about it, but he doesn't, so it was. more like a primer for his "real" novel, 2666, sets the stage for the investigation and players in the mexico border murders of 100's of women. but this novel centers around gay professor and dad who vacates chile for barcelona, gets run out of his college job there for gayness, gets a job in northern mexico, then discovers death all around him. a good short unfinished novel to prime a reader for the incredible 2666. such great writing, one could do worse than emulating roberto bolano on how to write novels. less

Woes of the True Policeman is to 2666 as He Do the Police in Different Voices is to The Waste Land.
