review 1: At first, I thought this book was a little self-aggrandizing. "I shot down 12 enemy planes in WWII! I went on a date with a movie star! I was the first person to shoot down a plane with a P-38 gone all dead-stick!".Then I verified it, and holy crap, it was all true. Not only did he shoot down those 12 planes in WWII, he got 4 MiGs in Vietnam, where he absolutely did lead from the front, and everyone who served with him really DID regard him as one of the finest leaders in the entire airforce. His "ahead of their time" ideas in this book really DID come from him, 20 years earlier than other people seeing the point.Generally, if Robin Olds was a character in a book, I'd think he'd be ridiculously over the top. This isn't fiction, though, this is a set of memoirs, and they're... more absolutely true. Olds gives some great insight as to the reasons for his success, and some as to why he only hit the rank of brigadeir general (yes, "only" a general, I know). That's basically the only issue I have with the book, that he glosses over some of his own issues, mostly with regards to his wife. I get that it was probably very painful to think about, or, you know, write on your deathbed, but it feels like he puts too much blame on her when he also was a HUGE part of their issues.Outside of that, though, it's a very entertaining book, with some great technical details, some thrilling anecdotes, and a LOT of good, inspiring, and useful material about being a leader and seeing where things stand to improve. Highly, highly recommended.
review 2: As a Former Marine Sergeant and a Retired Law Enforcement Officer I can honestly say that I have seen very few of what I would consider Heroes in my lifetime. After reading this true story of an American Fighter Pilot, I believe I have found a true Hero. I only wish I could have met this man. What an inspiration he was to so many American Military men and women. Every young American should read this book. This Hero loved America and lived that love. A real person not a Hollywood flunky. What a fantastic story and life. You are my Hero General Robin Olds, may your memory and love for this country live forever. less
