review 1: One of the most exciting history books I have read. I knew very little about this era, an appalling oversight in my education, and sought to correct it when this book was referenced in an article. It's riveting and informative. Crowley cites first hand accounts whenever possible and often does so in the text rather than in footnotes, which I appreciated. He also usually includes a brief comment about how reliable the best information available is, which I found very refreshing. If you are even remotely interested in the history of conflict between East/West, Islam/Christianity, or military history as a whole, I would very highly recommend. Great starting point for the era. I intend to further explore the topic in the future, and I have Mr. Crowley to thank for sparking... more my interest.
review 2: I got a bit lost in the book because of its density and very detailed descriptions of the battles. But I'm glad I read it, since I knew basically nothing about the maritime struggles of the Christian versus Ottoman worlds. The part that really blew me away was that after the naval battle of Lepanto, there wasn't another battle to equal that in gore and loss of life until WWI. I just can't imagine the brutality of it all. less

I learned a few things and it also showed the brutality of societies at sea during that time.

A little flowery and novelistic in style, but a good account of the siege of Malta.

Fascinating history of the early battles between Christianity and Islam.
