review 1: Gary Schmidt recommended this to me - and am I SO glad he did. I loved everything about this novel told in poetry-format. It is the story of Walker trying to come to grips with his brother's death. He flounders on his own until Jesus comes along and helps him siphon through the pain. As Jesus tells Walker, "I would have been here sooner, but the traffic on I-55 was awful." Thus begins the humorous, touching relationship of a teen boy learning about Jesus in a very human way - a way, I think, all of us could benefit from. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
review 2: I'm generally not a fan of books written in verse, but I adored Coaltown Jesus. Poetry is a perfect way for Walker to process his brother's recent death. Both his voice and Jesus's were downright delightful a
... morend I found myself laughing out loud several times. As an atheist raised by a devout Catholic, this is precisely the kind of Jesus I always imagine (except for that whole God part). A great read for teens and adults who have some background knowledge about Jesus and who have a sense of humor about religion. less
