review 1: This book was more poetry and prose than actual stories...and I loved it. It took a more cynical look at the notion of happily ever after...and I just really loved the cut out shadow images. I'm not sure about its classification as YA. Not that it's particularly over the top, but it is a little bawdy. However, I guess YA readers have more recently outgrown the fairy tale, and might find these modern/urban takes especially refreshing.
review 2: Here's one that's a must-read for more mature fans of fairy tales. Koertge takes well-known stories from the fairy tale cannon and turns them completely on their heads. In poetry form. Which is totally awesome. Many authors have difficulty getting their point across in 400 pages. Ron Koertge can tell a complete ... morestory in a single poem. And this book has tons of them! I loved these post-modern renditions; they feel simultaneously both truer to their original forms than many other modern adaptations and feel more contemporary than ever before.
