review 1: Rosie collects discarded popsicle sticks and keeps them in a box. When she overhears her parents bemoaning their money troubles, she wishes there was some way her box of sticks could become a treasure box instead. At the same time, the sticks are wishing they could be something more as well. Everyone gets what they want. At midnight the sticks turn into a horse, waking Rosie, and they fly across the world in search of treasure. Working together, Rosie and the popsicle sticks outwit some pirates, steal their gold, and fly back home again – all before the sun comes up! They have saved the day!Drugs. The people who wrote this story were on a lot of them. Fantasy and whimsy are great, but they work best when there are some logical/plausible explanations for the whys ... moreand wherefores. Popsicle sticks that want to be horses? Ok, but WHY? Little girls that randomly collect them? Ok, but WHY? Fathers who just accept the magical appearance of a treasure chest and use the goods to pay off their bills? Is he not going to ask where the gold came from? It’s a lot to swallow. Silly is fine – kids like silly – but respect their intelligence, too, and make it a well-reasoned silly.
review 2: Rosie collects discarded popsicle sticks, and when she overhears her parents worrying about being able to pay the bills, she dreams--and her dreams come true. The popsicle stick that she picked up earlier in the day has dreams of being something more than just a stick, maybe a horse, and despite the naysaying of the other sticks, he keeps dreaming and aspiring to more. That night, a magic horse helps Rosie find the money her parents need so desperately. This sweet story reminds readers that even sticks can long to have more in their lives and to BE someone special. The pen and watercolor illustrations are lovely, but I wonder how Rosie will explain how that treasure arrived in her parents' house. less

This just didn't do anything for me. Not a consideration for BMJ or my library collection.

Imagination. Touches on the idea of a family not having enough money to pay bills.
