review 1: This is a children's book (published by Scholastic), but because of the intense subject matter I'm not sure I would recommend it for children. It would only be appropriate for middle school or high school students, I suppose. After having said that, I really appreciated this little book about Terezin, the small town in Czechoslovakia, which was turned into a ghetto by the Nazis during World War II. The book explains the Jews' deportations, ghetto life, the transports to Auschwitz and other death camps, and finally, the liberation of the people (what few were still surviving) by the Russians at the end of the war. It was highly informative, full of real-life accounts, written by a few survivors and also by many who died (whose hidden writings were later discovered). It... more is also full of amazing art, showing the horrors of life in this place. The sketches and paintings are not traditionally beautiful, but they are inspiring and gut-wrenching in their honesty.
review 2: This is a perfect book for use with the 7th grade Common Core unit "Courage in Life and Literature." This well-researched and carefully presented book illustrates the story of the Holocaust from the voices of those who experienced it. The book contains secret drawings, diary entries, excerpts from memoirs, etc., all giving a first-hand look at the atrocities experienced by Jews in WWII. Great to pair some of the excerpts with the Diary of Anne Frank. less
