review 1: I'm giving up on this book not because of a lack of interest in it -- what I read seemed to contain intriguing, well-thought out characters, and the beginnings of a noirish plot that made my nose twitch -- but simply because the NIGH-CONSTANT 'all-merciful God' references became so tiring to slog through. I get it. I get it. I'm not offended by it, as an atheist, but it just became so difficult to get through a page that had SO MUCH unnecessary verbiage on it. Maybe it dies down later, but it was frustrating for me. I'll be curious to pick up book 2 of this, however, since Ahmed's plotting and characterization seem top-notch.
review 2: I have read so many fantasy books and have gone to think like I could predict what's going to happen next but this one's really
... more different. I enjoyed reading every chapters of it and I couldn't even get off from where I'm seated. I have also learned that to beat monsters isn't just a matter of using swords but also words. Words of faith. I found myself inlove with Raseed's incredible desire to beat evil disciples and truly be a servant of God and Zamia's bravery -- ofcourse their own lovestory :-) I adore Adoulla's bravery for facing every battle. I am truly inspired by Saladin Ahmed's work. less

I could not get into this at all. Too bad, most friends really seemed to like it!
