review 1: I don't feel this book can actually be given a consistent rating. From beginning to end my engagement & lack thereof was truly a roller coaster ride. However, for the most part I found there to be a high quantity of detail that actually disconnected me as a reader. The boredom became frustration through the final few chapters. Yes, life happens in this narrative in so many ways - to a degree that should make almost any reader connect and there were parts to which I should have connected, but the book borders on being a self-reflective cathartic diary, that instead left me very unmoved and very underwhelmed.
review 2: Beena is a control freak who takes it upon herself not just to guide and help others, but to make their decisions, restrict their independence
... more, and see herself as a martyr/savior. She resents her duties as sister and mother, oversteps both of them. On the other hand, her son is self centered and misdirected, and her sister is irredeemable. This is a story of a very dysfunctional co-dependant woman, trying to figure out what is wrong with everyone else. I did not like it, or the characters. It got tedious, their endless, pathetic arguing and their reasons for hating the world and each other. Too bad they didn't inherit the mom's character, she was odd, but she was a complete human being. One might read into this that love and hate are a fine line...but this plot is not very subtle in its "revelations". less

Enjoyed it even though so far fetched...how many tragedies can one person experience?
