review 1: This was a very interesting read. It's a quick one, but it's packed with a lot of interesting information about an event I had no idea happened. Considering it's the largest man-made explosion before the atomic bomb, it would seem that I would've heard of it. What a devastating event for all of the people in Halifax, but it was also refreshing to read about all of the people helping and lifting one another in a desperate time of need.
review 2: Over all I thought Blizzard of Glass: The Halifax Explosion of 1917 was a great read. Ironically, not many people are aware of this explosion between the Mont-Blanc and the Imo that completely devastated and destroyed the town of Halifax in Nova Scotia. Walker goes into great detail about the history of the town, its
... morepeople, and the industry that the town provided. After giving extensive background about Halifax, Walker then characterizes both the Mont-Blanc and the Imo and what their main purposes were during World War One. Personally, I believe this would be a great book to teach the historical aspect of semi-unknown Halifax explosion of 1917. It would greatly complement a lesson that deals with World War 1 and how the troops and supplies were being transported during this chaotic time. This book, combined with photography, can give the reader a better understanding of what Halifax was like both prior and proceeding the explosion. The photos that are presented further strengthens Walkers explanation and expertise of the explosion between the Mont-Blanc and the Imo and the culture of the town of Halifax. less
