Streaming options as of late have been a little lacking, so the list this week features a little lesser films like “The Great Wall,” starring Matt Damon, as a white man in China who has to save the Great Wall from monsters. So many poor choices. Years ago, I saw a rough cut of the Fisher Stevens drama “Stand Up Guys,” (I stood right next to him while standing in line for popcorn) starring Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, and Alan Arkin as essentially geriatric mob men going out for one last night. Jason Statham reprises his role as assassin “Mechanic: Resurrection,” but Jessica Alba and Tommy Lee Jones cannot make up for the loss of Ben Foster, who was in the original. Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow get caught in a U.S. civil war in “Bushwick,” as New York attempts to secede from the Union and all hell breaks lose in Bushwick, NY. Despite terrible press and an extremely low box office, Shia Labeouf stars in the war drama “Man Down,” where he faces PTSD after returning from duty. In one of the better animated features this year, “The Boss Baby,” Alec Baldwin voices a little baby that is actually a corporate spy implanted in a family to try and bring down the stock of puppies and how cute they are. But the baby’s little brother is on to him and is trying to prematurely force him out of the nest. Marion Cotillard plays a married woman falling for another man during WWII in “From the Land of the Moon,” while in a follow-up to “Obvious Child,” director Gillian Robespierre teams again with Jenny Slate to show how an affair effects a family with two sisters coming-of-age when they find out that their father, played by John Turturro is having an affair on their mother, played by Edie Falco. And to continue the affair trend, Denzel Washington plays yet another adulterer in “Fences,” where his wife is forced to put up with him despite his philandering. His wife is played by Viola Davis, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in this role, coming from the adapted stage play of playwright August Wilson. Based on the real life of Kumail Nanjiani and his wife, “The Big Sick” takes a comedic look at an almost-tragedy that eventually saw them together, starring Zoe Kazan, Ray Ramona, and Holly Hunter in a film that could have some possible Academy Award potential.
