review 1: "Rusty yet trusty and orangey red" is the refrain used to describe Farmer John's tractor--and it' a catchy refrain that my daughter started to repeat on her own. This is a charming little story about how sometimes even the thing that seems old and rundown can save the day. And, if you're paying attention, you'll realize that the tractor is a stand-in for Farmer John himself--an aging farmer and unlikely hero. Belton's soft watercolor illustrations are lovely. They really capture the rainy day setting of the book. And Sutton's rhyming text is so much fun to read.

... morek can't pass over a rock slide that is in its way. Although it may be old, Farmer John's truck is reliable enough to rescue the stranded folks. I like the description of the tractor as "rusty yet trusty and orangey red" (unpaged) that is repeated through the story and how the farmer just goes about his chores and doesn't get involved until everyone else has given the rescue a shot. The rhyming text is fun to read aloud, and the watercolor illustrations allow the weather and the steadily pouring rain to be the book's focus. less
