review 1: I have read Sam Kean's other books and highly enjoyed them (and learned a lot in the process), so when this book came out , I was delighted as about a subject matter of high interest to me. Again, the author writes in a most engaging manner that both elucidates and entertains. I took a bit of umbrage of his description of Dr. James W. Papez being "enraged" as he is my grandfather and was a very kind and calm man. No doubt though, he completed his paper "in a fit of spleen". That sounds like him but that is a bit different than being "enraged" (or so I think). Not a large matter. ( NB: Also a small fix is needed in the index as to Dr. Papez ) There are pictorial riddles at the beginning of each chapter which are fun and at first a bit challenging (until one gets the kn... moreack). A worthy read.
review 2: This was a fascinating book, especially impressive because the author is not a neurologist, neurosurgeon, or physiologist. He is a science writer with degrees (bachelor's, I believe) in physics and English. He makes understanding the working of the brain and the history of advances in brain knowledge interesting by relating stories about people with various brain dysfunctions as well as researchers trying to understand how the brain works. His writing style is relaxed, punctuated by colloquialisms. less

Pretty good. Full of very well known case studies, though.
