review 1: The author's purpose in writing this book was to shed a light on the invasion of Alaska during WWII. Most people have never heard of or even had any idea that this battle took place. Samantha Seiple wanted to educate the world of what truly took place during WWII. This battle may not have been publicized or studied in history books, but many precious lives were still taken from this earth. Seiple shows the reader the other side and what the government didn't want the citizens to know or find out. This nonfiction book unfolds the events leading up to the invasion and elaborates on the actions that took place while this horrible event panned out. There could be many themes derived from this book but bravery, perseverance, and hope stand out. This surpr... moreise invasion by the Japanese was in the Aleutians islands. These islands were populated by unsuspecting Americans who were taken captive and most of which were killed. This attack and invasion took place only a few months after the horror filled event of Pearl Harbor. Because it was so soon after, the press did not publicize it in order to keep everyone calm. The American citizens were captured and tortured. The Japanese put them into boats leaving them to starve and die. The Americans never lost their hope that they would be rescued. The American military bombed Alaska in order to drive out the Japanese but their efforts were to no avail. The civilians were eventually released but not until after much torture. These people possessed perseverance and hope that they carried with them until they were released. This book was written as a narrative nonfiction. It is written this way to allow the reader to understand the event in way of a story-like feel. In doing this, Seiple reaches into the imaginations of her readers, and she pushes them to react to the emotions and personal experiences they are exposed to. Because this historical event was not publicized, it shocks many readers once they understand this invasion truly took place. I enjoyed this book because it was a topic that I had not heard of. It Intrigued the mind and engaged your imagination. The WWII era is one of my favorite historical time periods to read and study, thus this helped to expand my knowledge. I would highly encourage a WWII fan to read this book. It allows you to discover a hidden realm of facts and personal stories that one may otherwise never hear about. Samantha Seiple strategically and expertly combined many experiences and has pleased the reader immensely.
review 2: The author's purpose in writing this book is to show people a different perspective during the World War 2 time period. Most of the time people are told about the major fights and battles of World War 2, but they are not told much about what happened in other parts of the world. The author tries to give a feeling for the soldiers in other places besides the main battlefield. The theme of this book is hardship and determination. No matter what you can't give up you have to persevere through hard situations. I think this book was written in a narrative way. The narrator is telling and walking you through the times of the World War 2 invasion of Alaska. Also in some parts it is more of a description of events that took place during this time period. But the author did a good job of blending these to writing techniques. I though this book was good because I personally like war-type books and action books. I liked the parts of the book that had action sequences and when the soldiers were stuck somewhere and had to work together to get out of the tight situation. There were also some boring parts of the book that kind of drug on and you had no clue what was really happening because of some of these parts, but overall I really enjoyed this book. This book is similar to a kind of biography, because of the way it was narrated to feel like it was in the soldier's perspectives which I thought was a very good technique. I would recommend this book to someone who likes action books, it was an enjoyable book and it was interesting to get a different perspective on the war. less

This book was very well written, but nonfiction just isn't my thing.
