review 1: This is one of those books that I should hate but I keep finding myself entertained. Evil aunt has hires some half wits to kill her neice. They don't kill her. They pocket her aunt's money and sell her into slavery. 1st irritating thing- 8 months goes by she is at auction and still a virgin? Then a random Duke, yes as if those are a dime a dozen, sees her, and out of pity buys her. Then she is so hot that he thinks, I'll kill 2 birds with one stone and marry this slave. Uhm,really? Afterwards she recovers from her a forced opium addiction, which has apparently lasted for the last 8 months during her captivity, in just a few days. She is a picture of glowing health and object of desire. She sows her sob story that her brother's life is in danger needs to rescue him. The D... moreuke says, yes but only if we get married. This isn't even half way through the story. It is outlandish, but I couldn't stop reading. They go to Italy with the aunt as a disappointing villain . Then on to London where there is a villainous cousin, that is also disappointing. But still I was reading. I just kept loving every stinking second of the whole cliché stuffed book. I decided that in spite of all the negatives that if the author can keep me reading then it deserves at least 3 stars.
review 2: First of all, I'm not a fan of having multiple narrators. Plus, the idea of a man buying a woman bothers me. Yes, I know this was the 1800s. That being said, the book wasn't as bad as it started out to be. I actually enjoyed it. The characters were interesting and the narrators were quite good. I was surprised by all the glowing reviews; I didn't see it as a 5-star book. I'll listen to book 2 in the series and see how that turns out. less
