review 2: At ~1000 pages, this massive brick of a book was quite intimidating. Despite its length, however, it turned out to be an easy and enjoyable read. Spanning 39 years, it explains the circumstances which led to the Roman Empire being ruled by Spanish-born Trajan, who contrary to tradition, was not a native Roman. The author does an excellent job
... moredescribing everyday life in Rome. What used to be random and isolated historical facts in my head, were masterfully interwoven. Put into context and co-existing were, for example, christian persecutions and John's apocalypse, the eruption of the Vesuvius, the fall of Jersualem, gladiators, the year of the Four Emperors, etc. This was all spiced by incest, paranoia, death, and all the court intrigue one could hope for. It never seemed like a “Best of Wikipedia”, either- the story was very cleverly told, with multiple point of views and going back in the narration at a crucial point. Stylistically, it could have been better. Once or twice I felt the author's undoubtedly extensive historical knowledge got in the way of his storytelling, with for example, a little too much explanation of military strategy or a too forcibly inserted piece of historical data. At times the characters felt too flat, with the exception of Domitian- I guess modern writers figured out a long time ago that they only need to look back in history for inspiration to create twisted, awful “love-to-hate” evil rulers a la Joffrey Baratheon. Anyway. Overall, the author still did a good job balancing the historical and the fictional aspects. I felt like I learned a lot, which left a nice aftertaste in my mouth, too. Reading this was quite a commitment and I know historical fiction is not for everyone, but for those who have the time and are interested in the Roman Empire, the thousand pages are worth it. less
