review 1: I read this because of a review I read by Nancy Pearl. I've been kind of hit or miss with her reviews. This book was definitely a miss. The narrator is a twenty-something college graduate who, after reading the novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, becomes obsessed with the book and the character of Jim Hawkins. The narrator is a sociopath who sabotages the relationships in her life by her self-destructive and narcissistic behavior. Everything awful that befalls the character is entirely her own fault and the ending sees no redemption for this character (nor real consequences). The book was short, which was a good thing, seeing as I had absolutely no interest in spending another minute with this character.
review 2: Holy pirate ship was this funny! G
... moreenuine laugh out loud hilarity (Just to be perfectly clear I mean this in the spelled out laugh out loud way NOT the teenage texters'ubiquitous LOL version because I am so NOT that kind of person.) Anyway, I would have never given this book a second glance had I not heard a riotous review on my beloved Literary Disco ("Where books come to dance."). Unlike the story's protagonist, I have no affinity for Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale and thus, would not have thought to crack the cover. Levine's masterful portrayal of a truly horrible individual (a sort of female George Costanza on steroids) delighted my twisted mind. I adore irreverent humor especially in this overly-PC age. My only complaint: I've finished reading the book! less

The book is short enough that it doesn't outlive the comedy of its main premise.
