review 1: I grabbed this book along with a few others from our school book fair with the purpose of being familiar with what my students were reading. From the cover image (this edition was from Scholastic) I thought it was going to be another silly, cartoonish story. Was I wrong!The story is dead serious, but grabs the reader right away with a very unusual first-year teacher who knows just how to keep the students guessing and balancing 'fun' with the usual boring classroom instruction . I like that the author did not take a pro or anti-war position in the book, rather she presented realistic lives of military children and gave them an opportunity to speak out and make a difference.I loved that Bo's father recognized that he was actually liking school this year for the first time i... moren his life. The image of Bo's father as a 'walk-the-line' type of guy was strongly balanced with being a caring father who recognized his son's strengths and gave him fair chances and a say in family matters when possible. I'm glad the author did not make him the over-bearing military guy who couldn't be reasoned with!Some may think the author went a little overboard, and that this would not be feasible in a real classroom, but does open some possibilities when we allow ourselves to say, "Yes, and..."
review 2: I liked Miss Loupe, the eccentric teacher who the kids obviously couldn't get enough of. The improv was fun (but obviously common core standards weren't in place yet when this occurred... haha!). It was neat to get insight to a school on a military base and I liked the characters enough. However, while I loved the book for the first half, I think it was overly sappy at some parts and lacked emotion at other important times. less
