review 1: Interesting plot, but so much of it is rather predictable. I liked the characters and the trials that each went through. Meira's journey into adulthood (albeit within what seems like 1 month)is believable, yet predictable. The book certainly hit all the right elements: outcast, magic, hidden powers, royal love interest, unrequited love, birth secrets, etc. However, it was all a little predictable. This is not to say that I did not enjoy this book, because I did. But, it's unlikely that I'll re-read it. On the other hand, if there's a sequel, I will most likely read that. And, the book is still on my Kindle. Books I hate or that I think were just too ordinary get deleted right away.Perhaps it's the ending that did not work for me so well. It's a bit abrupt and I can'... moret figure out if that's because there will be a sequel, or if the author just finished her book and didn't know how to end it.The handling of the competing love interests also did not sit well with me. First, fair warning that I despise love triangles, especially in the YA category. This is because the love triangles are so unnecessary, and are blown all out of proportion in the name of teen angst. Here, I can't quite figure out if it's an actual love triangle. See, Meira has grown up with only 1 potential male love interest all her life, who she has been told is out of her league because he is the king and she is an unknown, orphaned child and most likely just of the servant class. This king shares her love because it's not as though he's been exposed to girls his age either. Then the plot thickens and Meira is engaged to another royal as part of an alliance. We learn that her fiancee is really likeable and noble. She sees another side to him. She learns more about herself. And once the roles are reversed, well what happens to her first love interest? He was willing to fight for Meira when Meira was a nobody. Will she fight for him as well? Although, like I said, her fiancee is really likeable, too.
review 2: The first book in this series has definitely left me wanting to read the next one!! This book is set in a far away time, as many fantasy books are. The two main characters are Mather and Meira who are life long friends after they were found when the kingdom they lived in was overrun with an evil king who took over. This king was also a user of magic, only he used the magic in dark ways which kept his people in slavery. Eight people escaped with Mather and Meira being two of them. Mather is the crown prince who is now actually king after his mother was killed when the evil king took over. They are in search of two halves of a ring to restore magic and Mather to the kingdom. And then starts the incredible action in the story. The character development was terrific and I really got to know what made everyone who they are. The weaving of the story keeps the reader entranced in the book. I couldn't put this book down at night when I was reading because it was such an amazing story. It wasn't like any fantasy story I have read so far, which I really enjoyed!I highly recommend this book. You won't be able to put it down! less
