review 1: Review written at 60% (Not a DNF, but a skim-read)What was original and engaging in book #1 of the Muses of Mayfair series, is overdone and repetitive in book #2. Book #1 was an actress refusing to marry with legitimate reasons- the story itself was addictive and enthralling with a fair amount of conflict that kept the reader on their toes. In book #2, we do a rerun of book #1: h refusing to marry the H. Only this time, it's rather lame and dull. The beginning had me reading it rapidly to find out what happened next, but then it just stalled with the inner monologue of the H & h: his wanting a 'proper' wife and her wanting to be left alone to write (these thoughts are on just about every single page. EVERY. SINGLE. PAGE). This is the only conflict. The reader knows they ar... moree going to get married, it's going to happen no matter what, so how is this truly a conflict? I hope that book #3 & #4 do NOT go about this same formulaic premise. The h (Muse) uses their 'secret talent' to thwart the H's marital proposal, where for nearly 400 pages we have a repeat of ruminations from the H & h. As I said, it was great in book #1, but only because it was 'NEW' to the reader. While I enjoyed the characters, by the time I hit the 30% mark, I felt like the story should have met its conclusion- truncated down into a novella. Everything just felt forced after that part. The H & h met, they had a conflict over almost being affianced to the best friend, best friend runs off, and to me that should have been it- maybe elongated that part of the story. But the rest after that point up and until the 60% mark is the same thing over and over again. Marry Me. NO. Compromised. Brother: Marry Him. NO. Mother: Marry Him. NO. Marry Me. No. I need a proper wife. I want to write even though I won't tell you that. *premarital fooling around* Marry Me. NO. I need a proper wife. I want to write even though I won't tell you that. *premarital fooling around* Friends: Marry Him. NO. Marry Me. No. I want a proper wife. I want to write even though I won't tell you that. (Annoying, ain't it?)I felt forced to finish the book to go onto the next in the series, and I feel awful for stating it. But, nonetheless, it's true. Will I read more from this author: Yes. Do I recommend this author: Yes, I truly enjoyed book #1. Will I finish the series: Yes, but it may be a skim-read, which totally takes away being rapt and entertained if you're not truly connected with the story. Just as one does in a rerun episode of their favorite series, they fast-forward to the necessary parts. ***Will update review after I finish the book, IF anything truly changes.
review 2: Scotsmen Prefer Blondes (2nd in the Muses of Mayfair series) by Sara Ramsey"The next morning, Amelia slashed through another paragraph of drivel. The story, which was so promising when she worked on it in London, had come completely undone in Scotland. Perhaps that was the inevitable consequence of living a Gothic romance instead of writing it."Lady Amelia Staunton secretly writes scandalous gothic romances about the ton. She doesn't want to marry as she's sure a husband would make her give up her writing. But she is forced into marriage when she is caught kissing Malcolm, an incredibly handsome, Highland Laird, who seeks a proper English wife to host parties for him in London to benefit his political pursuits. As the lines from the book, which are posted at the top of the review, hint, Amelia soon finds herself living a gothic romance rather than writing one. This passionate, sensual Regency Romance, Scotsmen Prefer Blondes, is a fun read. I highly recommend it. less
