review 1: Ugh! Reading this book was laborious indeed! Rarely have I been so frustrated by the stupidity and naivety of a protagonist. I had zero compassion for the main character and the mess she got herself into, mainly because she completely lacked any redeeming qualities and didn't seem to learn or grow from any of her experiences. I only finished this book because I'm too OCD not to finish something once I've started it, but do yourself a favor and leave this one on the shelf!
review 2: I read this book after reading Machiavelli's 'The Prince' for one of my college classes and becoming rather obsessed with the Borgias. My e-book didn't have that sexy cover, so I wasn't previously warned what kind of book it would be. It's rather amusing (but also very sad) how autho... morers can turn a story which could have been interesting into complete nonsense. The main character Violeta is completely smitten with Cesare Borgia even though she doesn't have a good reason for that infatuation other than his looks and power. He even might have been responsible for the death of her brother and she just doesn't bother to confront him about that. Lucrezia Borgia is shown as a very religious and rather boring woman which pissed me off so much because I'm quite sure that she was a very fascinating woman who led an adventurous life. I couldn't keep on reading because it just felt forced and didn't match the historical facts and description of the Borgia family. less
