review 1: I got this book after I watched the show "The Borgias" on Showtime and since the show was cancelled, I craved a continued story of the unholy family. So I began reading with my heart rooting for the Cesare and Lucrezia couple. But after I started, I began to feel for the female protagonist in this story and wanted her and Cesare together. It was painful in my heart to read her tragic life and her stupidity against the irresistible Valentino. This woman has the luck of a rat that has been killed ten times over by a flock of seagulls, and multiply that by ten. But after skipping some parts - as it was a very slow read - it finally got to the real juicy part at the end of the book, where there is a big reveal (although I had suspected the plot twist for a while). Overall, I w... moreould say that it is a pretty interesting read. I found the protagonist's heart to be described perfectly like a teenage girl that have just fallen in love, which was great. I liked that the author didn't really put Lucrezia and her family in a positive light like the many other books on them, which made the story seem much more interesting in my opinion. It is definitely something that I would recommend - if you enjoy traggic love stories and a hint of impropriety ;) If you enjoyed the show "The Borgias," then you must read this book!
review 2: I started reading this book expecting to find out something more about the Borgia family, but I have to say I was very disappointed to find nothing more then a romance novel, with no happy ending I might add. The only thing that you learn about this famous family is simplest of things like who is related to who, who married who and a couple mentioned cities that Cesare invaded, other then that everything else is based on unproved gossip or the authors imagination all mixed together that you have no idea what might be the truth. In my opinion if Bower would have used different (made up names) and made up places this book would have been shown for what it really is, an ordinary and I have to say shallow romance novel. The only reason the Borgia name was used in this book is to give it that seductive, dark and scandalous allure that the story itself doesn't have, and wouldn't be able to attract readers without. If you are going to use historical figures in a book, then do your home work, study them and tell the story about their life, don't use their name on the cover then give them supporting roles to your character. less

Good story, mostly. I liked the way historical details large and small were woven in.
