review 1: 3.5. I liked this one but I didn't love it, and despite the praise on the back, I do think it feels like a debut novel. I'm excited to see what Sarah Butler comes up with next, though, because this really was charming. I especially liked the ending-- not too saccharine or sentimental and it definitely could've gone that way-- but I don't think I ever really cared very much about any of the characters.
review 2: For a first novel, this had amazing presence. I like the tools she used to construct each chapter that flops between a man and his daughter, both dealing with multiple losses; only one of whom is aware of the bond. This could so easily become a kind of charming film to watch. For once, I was actually unhappy about an author who left the story hanging i... moren a pivotal moment, usually I can be content with "untied bows" but this just felt in need of rewriting for a little direction or closure less
