review 1: Jacob's New Dress by Sarah Hoffman is a story about a young boy dares to be different. Jacob likes to pick out his own outfits at home, his parents like to support his freedom of choices. But one day Jacob decides he wants to wear a dress to school. Although his parents are supportive, they know this may make issues at school. But nonetheless they help him make a new dress for school. What happens next is a round of taunting and controversy that Jacob is unaccustomed to. He doesn't understand what is wrong with his dress. This picture book, although filled with fun colorful pictures that help make the story more meaningful, is really told in powerful statements. The meanings are implied and told in actions, like the acceptance that Jacob receives from his parents, but the ... moredeeper issues are enhanced by the powerful illustrations. Hoffman manages to make this social issue both accessible and enjoyable, while bringing heart to a little boy's dreams.
review 2: Jacob's New Dress by Sarah Hoffman is a children's book that specifically deals with gender identity and gender roles. Throughout the book Jacob wants to wear a dress but no one is quite supportive of this decision. His mother tries to explain to jacob why most people won't like the idea of him wearing a dress. But Jacob is way beyond his years and realizes that it doesn't matter what people think about him, he can do what makes him feel happiest. Throughout this book there are times that the reader feels bad for Jacob because of how the children at his school are rude to him about his dressing preferences. This book proves that to be happy you need to break the stereotypes that are holding everyone back. less

Charming & not too preachy. I like that his parents are a bit conflicted.
