review 1: It was okay. It starts off with an interesting plot about a young barmaid trying to make ends meet. Celaena passes through and this girl catches her eye. Yrene gets attacked by ruffians. I kind of liked the story to this point but then Celaena went off and told Yrene she was the cause of her own destruction. WHAT? Are you serious? Not everybody can have training like you Celaena. I mean, she is a poor barmaid who gets beaten down everyday. This I did not appreciate. No matter who it was that was attacked...how could they be the cause? Unless you have blinkers on you that say 'free to attack me' I don't think you can blame them. However, in the end it did redeem itself by Yrene leaving. YES. Thank the heavens. If she would have stayed then I would have been disappointed. Ov... moreerall, other then the nitpicky point that seems to overshadow this review it was okay. Nothing spectacular but substantial for a little background on Celaena.
review 2: Out of all of them, this one seems to be the most insignificant, why was it written? I feel like it could have been omitted and we wouldn't have missed anything. Basically, Celaena is on her way to the Mute Master's abode but he's hit a detour while waiting for a ship to sail. In this small town (of dreams lost haha) she meets this barmaid named Yrene. After she saves the girl from being ambushed in the alley by some drunk clients (after hours), Celaena decides to train her in the defense arts. Before she departs, Celaena leaves Yrene with all her money to help her get away from the town, so that she can go train as a proper healer (at Antica). The okay:It does explain what happened to Celaena (or what WILL happen). We learned that magic has disappeared from the land since Adarian took over (it was also hinted with the Pirate Lord's tattoo). We get some hints into what could be Celaena's past. Was she a mageling? Did something similar to Yrene's past happen to her? Why exactly did she want to go to Antica? Since it's known for learning and magic...? less
