review 1: I read this as part of the "Apocalypse Whenever" group read for the August BOTM. It was a well written and enjoyable story I didn't want to put down! I have to admit that I'm not big into zombies, but the characters and the explanation for the zombie virus set this book apart. I didn't give it a full five stars because there were areas of the story that I felt were a little "glossed over", and times I didn't like the main character (I understand she was under stress, but still...). If you're into character-driven action and adventure, this novel is for you! I've already downloaded the second novel, "And After" (Book 2).
review 2: Love and the Zombie ApocalypseIt is said the best stories have rich characters regardless of what plot the writer throws at them. Th
... moreis extremely well written book is chock-full of vibrant characters: you’ll cheer for them during their successes, and cry for their losses. In the end, I was hooked as a reader, desiring to know what comes next, even if I was pretty sure what that would be. To be honest, I am not a big zombie-fiction fan. Do we need another zombie book in this world? I’m guessing there are more zombie books out there than there are zombies in this book. Also, I was kind of hoping for some new spin to this genre, but noooo: virus turns people into zombies; no one believes and they cannot even say “the word”; it happens in NYC, where no post-apocalyptic book has ever been set before (right?); they escape when everyone else doesn’t; they become super zombie killers to survive; some people are worse than the zombies; and they head to an anti-zombie fortified sanctuary. UTEOTW is a softer version of a DJ Molles zombie-yarn. Told in the first person, this book is really about the main character’s (Cassie) love life and her endless lamentations about this: she doesn’t like him anymore, she wants to break up with him, but it would be wrong to do during the end of the world, she still has feelings for her ex-boyfriend, blah-blah-blah. Come on woman, it’s the fricking end-of-the-world, get over it!It’s not that this story is bereft of action. In fact, there is a fair amount of action. However, way too much time was spent early on ruminating over Cassie’s inner angst. It drove me nuts and I was ready to pitch the story mid-way through, rating it at best three stars. However, I stuck with it and enjoyed the rest of the story, no matter how predictable. Frankly, it was the adept writing and storytelling that held me. If we had less of Cassie’s inner conundrums over her love life early in the book, I probably would have rated it five stars, in spite of its zombie-fied storyline. So, to my fellow readers, if you want a well-written, first person love story, set in a post-apocalyptic zombie-ravaged world, where the protagonist is a solid prepper, I would highly recommend this one. less
