review 1: Alex is a vampire who is trying the break his life from sleeping in his coffin so he can embrace his more "human" side. He moves into an old house near to his friends, a pack of werewolves. He also meets a mystery veterinarian, Tate. We know something is different about Tate, but it is not confirmed until the final few chapters of the book. A lot of this book is spent learning about the characters (so maybe there could be a sequel or two). The characters are interesting, and there is a little bit of drama along the way that is provided by a couple of secondary characters. If you enjoy stories about vampires, werewolves, and shape-shifters then this is a book for you. Similarly, if you like to read about good character development, then this book would also get a hi... moregh rating. I give this book a solid four star rating -- I would really like to learn a lot more about the characters and their stories in a couple of sequels.
review 2: Funny story with unusual details about vampires and werewolvesWarning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS. Rating: 7/10PROS: - I am far from an authority on vampire or werewolf lore. That said, a lot of the details pertaining to Alex’s vampire nature and Nick’s pack’s werewolf natures struck me as very interesting and unusual.- This book has a sly sense of humor, often quiet and gently self-critical. Here’s an early statement that made me chuckle: Alex is pondering what to do with his time and considers taking up writing because “He’d heard that vampire fiction was very popular right now.” The dialogue is often funny too, and there are some moments of physical humor that fall just shy of slapstick.- Many of the vampire stories I’ve read involve characters who are unbelievably wealthy and can do whatever they want without even considering the cost. I liked reading a story in which a vampire character was more normal in this area, having to save up and watch his finances the way most people do.- The descriptions of Tate’s mannerisms as a veterinarian are very well done. I grew up with a vet, and I rarely read books with veterinarian characters that I find believable. (Once I read the author bio at the end of the book and discovered that the author is a vet, this all made a great deal of sense.)CONS:- Alex is a jerk at the beginning of the story, and although I knew I was bound to find out the reason for his grouchiness, it still took a while for me to warm up to him. I had a “Tate deserves better” mantra running through my mind for almost the first half of the story.- I don’t mind romances with little or no sex, but for some reason I was a little disappointed in that regard with this story. There are a lot of hints at the attraction between Alex and Tate, and it didn’t seem to me like there was much payoff.Overall comments: I enjoyed this quite a bit, despite my tendency to find vampire stories a bit boring. There are a couple decent sex scenes, a heartfelt romance, and quite a few funny moments. I’m not sure how much this will stand out in my memory several months from now, but I thought it was a great way to spend a couple of evenings. less
