Doctrine of Labyrinths
review 1: Satisfying conclusion to the Doctrine of Labyrinths series. Good mix of adventure and introspection for the benighted brothers, Felix and Mildmay. Dropped into a political maelstrom in Corambis by their exile from Melusine, they manage again to become the very heart of the matter. [return]Mildmay, less educated but possibly smarter, and by far more emotionally mature, learns to deal with his brother directly and less fearfully. Felix learns, finally, that he doesn't exist in a world of one. His emotional growth is handled a bit smugly, but still believeably.[return]Monette uses this book to introduce a new character that is clearly a set-up for a romance for Felix, but skirts the actual romance; leaving it as a possibility without getting maudlin about it. [return]I'm... more personally not particularly fond of steampunk, so introduction of elements of that genre left me cold.
review 2: With this book the characters move on to a nation that is more steampunk than Medieval arcane fortress. With the exploration into the workings of arcane machinery along their travels Felix is forced to finally grow as a character, relearning kindness and patience do not have to be absent from true magical genius and strength. I liked how they continued the thread of mikary and the pervasive nature of labyrinths in their world as a directive conduit for arcane energies and bleeding centers of dark energy. less
