review 1: This was a fun, fast-paced read for a non-fiction book! Sarah and Candy of "Smart Bitches, Trashy Books" discuss the romance novel genre, and all there is to love and dislike about it. There's a lot of interesting stuff in here about the romance novel industry, the common tropes of the genre and why they exist, and the influence of changing social norms on genre trends. The book is definitely written with tongue firmly in cheek(or possibly any other available orifice, har har), with lots of cussing, lots of sex talk, and lots of sass. If I have a complaint, it's that they got a little too irreverent. It's a lot of fun, but i found myself wishing for more information in exhange for a little less of the intentionally ridiculous euphemisms and swearing. Anyway, it's obvious t... morehat the authours have a lot of love for the genre and happy to defend it against people who dismiss it as "chick porn" or junk books. At the same time, they are very upfront about the bad parts of the genre and aren't afraid to be critical of the glaring problems that crop up in the genre. All in all, it's a book I've been wanting to read for a long time, and I'm definitely glad I finally got my hands on a copy. Thoroughly enjoyed it, gained some knowledge, and loved this deeper look at a genre I enjoy dipping into from time to time.As one last note: the activities in the end are fun. My husband and I cackled madly at the results of our Romance Novel "Mad-libs"
review 2: Overall, this was enjoyable because of my own love for romance novels. Dissecting the romance novel and all of the cliches or tropes was interesting and I found myself laughing out loud and nodding my head a lot, agreeing with the authors. Their humor got old pretty fast, and there was innuendo on every single page. I did find the insights into how to defend your reading habits to others who think that reading romance makes you lesser of a person, great. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who doesn't read romance though, as I am sure that you wouldn't enjoy it. This is more of a book for people who can readily agree with this guide to romance novels because they know the genre inside out as well. less
