review 1: I enjoyed the first few chapters of this book. Zettel did an excellent job of setting the scene of the Dust Bowl and creating a fantastical setting right off the bat. The story truly started off with a bang, especially when describing the craziness of her mother. However, as the story progressed, when Callie and Jack left the hotel to flee the Hoppers, the story began going downhill for me. I got more than halfway through and I could not finish it. I tried--I really did, but this book just did not do it for me. I did not care about the characters. I liked Jack, but Callie was a little dry. Shimmer and Shake made me flustered rather than intrigued. I made it until they left the theater after Bull Morgan and the dozen Trixies were after them, but at that point, I di... moredn't care. The sweetness of the first seventy-five pages unfortunately did not flow into the remainder of the story.
review 2: I'm a little new to reading for fun, so this is going to be a pretty simple review. I loved this book and could hardly put it down. It had a few spots that were almost a little too dark for my liking, but overall it was a great read. As far as characters, plot, writing style, etc... it all made me feel like I was in the story too and that's where it got me hooked as a reader. I loved the characters and how they interacted with one another, their stories, etc. I felt like there were a lot of descriptions and details in every bit of the story. The mixture of history and mythology/fantasy was perfect. When I thought I had each part of the plot figured out, the author kept me guessing as to what was happening next or who did what. I will be reading the second book next and am excited to see where it leads. less
